Global Initiative on Promoting Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems

Modern and cost-effective Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS) have transformed cities into more liveable environments. These high-quality, mass transit systems can be constructed within the budgets of most municipalities, even in low-income cities.

Apart from NESTLAC activities, a number of UNEP funded projects through the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) are currently being implemented by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP). These global projects are mainly focused on providing technical assistance on planning, design and implementation of BRT systems in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Cartagena (Colombia) and Jakarta (Indonesia). In addition, non-motorized transport e.g pedestrian pathways and cycling networks are also integrated in the projects.

The project also includes the development of a BRT Planning Guide. Transport and planning professionals now have at their fingertips a comprehensive resource for planning Bus Rapid Transit Systems. The Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide covers everything from project preparation to implementation for state-of-the-art and cost-effective urban public transport solutions.

The 850-page Guide includes contributions from a wide range of professionals and practitioners with direct experience in the design and implementation of BRT systems throughout the world. The Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide includes a step-by-step description of the planning process, including

Although the updated Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide will appeal mainly to planning and engineering professionals, others groups can also benefit from the Guide's thorough information resources, including non-governmental organizations, national and regional policymakers, and business groups.

The Guide was developed through support from UNEP, Global Environment Facility (GEF), the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and GTZ.

Currently available in English, the Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide is being translated into Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
