Areas of Work
Mobilizing Finance
UNEP's energy finance work focuses on mobilising investment for
renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and systems.
Energy Efficiency
UNEP Energy's energy efficiency activities involve various facets
of promoting industrial new and innovative energy efficiency methodologies
and techniques, as well as clean energy technology research, development,
transfer and commercialization.
Renewable Energy
UNEP promotes the deployment of renewable energy technologies
by providing information on solar and wind energy potentials,
renewable energy policy effectiveness analyses and information
in support of financial risk management of renewable energy project
development.
Transport
UNEP promotes the integration of environmental considerations
into transport-related decisions at all levels, ranging from global
to personal. The overall objective is to bring about a shift to
both transport systems and approaches to mobility that are less
disruptive to the environment while reducing the growing energy
demand from the sector. This includes promoting a balanced growth
among different transport modes in particular public transport
and non-motorized transport modes, modal shifts to less polluting
modes, inter-modality that improves the overall efficiency of
the transport system.
Bioenergy
Bioenergy as part of an energy mix that includes other
renewable energy sources, and alongside energy efficiency and
changed patterns of production and consumption - is an essential
energy option for a range of applications. It provides a number
of opportunities in terms of climate change mitigation, energy
security and development benefits. However, these opportunities
do not necessarily materialize, and in addition, bioenergy can
pose a number of serious risks. UNEP works in partnership with
governments, the private sector and NGOs to maximize the benefits
and reduce the environmental and social costs of producing and
using bioenergy, by: assuring environmental and social sustainability
of biofuels through sustainability principles and criteria; supporting
governments in bioenergy planning and policy frameworks; and helping
test business models that use energy crops to maximize the development
benefits of bioenergy.
