successful in improving air quality by regulating the use of some
non-CO2 pollutants. Molina referred to the Montreal Protocol as
a successful mechanism, which largely phased out the use of chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs).

6 December 2010 -
The Conference of the Parties (COP) 16 for international climate

last years Copenhagen, the profile has been very subdued.
Primarily that is because expectations are significantly lower going

Int'l Negotiators Eye Ozone Treaty as Shortcut to CO2 Deal
30 November 2010 -
A proposal to curb some of the world's most potent heat-trapping
gases by expanding a decades-old treaty appears to be turning heads.
With international attempts to broker major climate deals falling
short, expanding the Montreal Protocol may represent the best shot
at fighting rising temperatures, some analysts say. And overcoming
one of the most formidable hurdles to this approach may be on the
menu at the global warming summit in Cancun, Mexico.

Let me wish you very happy Ozone Day. This year is special because
it is the 25 th anniversary of the discovery of the Ozone Hole and
it is aslo the year in which the world has put CFCs and other ozone
depleting chemicals in history books. Nothing more than the extract
from June 2010 report on the Millennium Development Goals and the
message from the UN Secretary-General are needed to celebrate our

The
United Nations declared the 16th of September as the International
Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer to commemorate the 16th
of September 1987, the date when the Montreal Protocol was signed.
The Protocol controls the production and use of ozone-depleting
substances. It is an outstanding example of a successful cooperation
between scientists, governments, non-government organizations and
industry as well as between developed and developing countries.

the recovery of the ozone layer by up to 3.3 years. Today a tool-box

Major climate decisions brewing in obscure ozone treaty talks
18 June 2010- Governments
moved closer Friday to curbing the use of chemicals commonly used
as coolants in refrigerators, air conditioners, hair spray and other
household items in what some say would be among their biggest climate
decisions ever.
The obscure round of U.N. ozone treaty talks in Geneva, which few
people are following, laid the groundwork this week for a possible
decision in Uganda in November to halt the promotion of hydrofluorocarbons,
or HFCs, which are manmade chemicals not found naturally in the
environment, and are considered greenhouse gases.

and a number of ministers from the Maldives announced an important
Joint Declaration for the Implementation of the HCFC

"We believe that going
green isn't just ecologically sound but also economically
beneficial. The Maldives is famed for its luxury resorts, whose
refrigeration systems are the source of most of the country's HCFC
emissions. Moving early to phase out the use of HCFCs not only helps
protect the beautiful tropical environment tourists come to see
but also positions Maldives as a strong eco-destination" said
President Nasheed."

Mobile
Air Conditioning (MAC) and the Environment: India Policy Workshop
on the status of MAC Replacement Technologies, New Delhi, India,
7-8 June 2010
7 June 2010- Mobile vehicle
air-conditioning results in direct emissions of refrigerant gases
and indirect emissions of tailpipe greenhouse gases from the additional
fuel that is burned to power the AC system. In conformance with
the requirements of the Montreal Protocol the Indian MAC systems
have done away with the usage of ozone-depleting CFC-12 as refrigerant
in MACs in all new vehicles, although some servicing of old MAC
equipment is still required. The current replacement refrigerant,
HFC 134a, still has a high global warming potential and is included
in the basket of greenhouse gases controlled under the Kyoto Protocol.
It was estimated that in 2002, two third of the total HFC emissions
were emissions from MAC systems.
This
workshop will offer the opportunity for international and India's
experts and stakeholders to meet and exchange on the latest technology
and market developments and their environmental impacts. It is organised
as part of the UNEP "JumpStart" project on "Reducing
car emissions in China and India's Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC)
sector: Next-generation MAC technology support", which is funded
by the European Union.
