Business & Industry Global Dialogue: Strengthening the
role of the private sector in the transition to a Resource
Efficient and Green Economy: On the road to Rio+20
Over 200 representatives from business
and industry, governments and civil society gathered in
Paris 11-12 April for the 2011 United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) Business and Industry Global Dialogue (BIGD)
on the transition to a green economy.
Organized by the UNEP in collaboration with the International
Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the French postal service
Le
Groupe La Poste, which hosted the event at its Paris
headquarters, the two-day Business and Industry Global Dialogue
aimed to define the private sector's role in moving towards
a low carbon, resource-efficient green economy.
The 2011 BIGD had close to 200 participants representing
business and industry, civil society and government coming
from 24 countries. The discussion during the two days respectively
focused on:
- Introducing the key findings and conclusions of the
Green
Economy Report (GER) to solicit feedback from Business
and Industry and to discuss its contribution and engagement,
and
- Identifying operational engagements of business and
industry in promoting the transition to Green Economy
as inputs global processes leading to Rio+20 (including
CSD19 as well as Rio+20).
The two-day global dialogue brought together ideas and
discussions on opportunities and challenges with regard
to the transition to a green economy and sketched the direction
for significant contributions for a global process, considering
the private sector's perspective. There were further calls
from business leaders to encourage greater investment in
sustainable practices.
