Description / Synopsis

The Rise Above Plastics program is the Surfrider Foundation’s response to the problem of plastic litter in our oceans and marine environment. They are calling upon people to reduce their plastic footprint by reducing or eliminating the use of products such as single-use plastic water bottles and plastic bags.

Surfrider Foundation member Charlie Moore sailing home from a transpacific yacht race decided to take a shortcut through the Northern Pacific Gyre. As he glazed the surface of what should have been a pristine ocean, as far as the eye could see, was plastic. Bottles, bottle caps, wrappers, fragments, plastic debris was everywhere. This was no surprise, the to scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who have been documenting the growing amount of plastic trash and debris collecting in oceans since 1985.

The goal was to raise awareness of the global plastic epidemic. To educate the public of the impacts single-use plastics have on marine environments and how individuals can make changes in their daily lives and within their communities that will stem the flow of plastic into the environment.

The “Whale” spot has been featured on national media outlets like Huffington Post and Creativity Online, has generated 600 plus Diggs. YouTube alone has had more than 200,000 views internationally. Independent blogs have posted about it and more than 3000 tweets related to the work.
