Description / Synopsis
In this animated video, Professor Hoo, rides the water cycle and demonstrates how inspite of the numerous benefits wetlands provide such as food, water and flood protection, we continue to destroy or degrade them to make way for urbanization , intensive agriculture and Industrialization. Professor Hoo concludes his ride with recommendations to universities, governments, businesses and everybody, on what actions to take in order to transform our current approach to wetlands.
The TEEB for Water and Wetlands report published February 2013, stated that wetlands are a fundamental part of local and global water cycles providing numerous ecosystem services to humankind. Nonetheless, wetlands continue to be degraded, 50% have been lost mainly because policies and decisions do not sufficiently take into account their full value. The report presented recommendations on why and how the value of water and wetlands can be mainstreamed into decision making.
Wetlands are a fundamental part of local and global water cycles providing numerous ecosystem services to humankind. The full value of water and wetlands needs to be recognized and integrated into decision-making in order to meet our future social, economic and environmental needs.
