Context The health and biodiversity of coral reefs are critical to cultural values and economic livelihoods of millions of people, who rely on coral reefs as a major source of income and food, and for protection from the forces of the ocean. However, more than 27% of the world’s coral reefs have already been destroyed; another 58% are under threat. Direct and indirect impacts from tourism are one important factor of coral reef degradation. | Philosophy/Solution To educate visitors and tour guides about coral reefs, the complicated ecosystem that sustains them, and ways to protect these miracles of nature. A communications toolkit that is directed towards tourists (both adults and children) and hotel managers presents ten simple measures for the preservation of the reefs, from avoiding fish feeding or touching corals to waste water treatment and increased energy efficiency. | | Title | "Coral or no coral?" | | Agency | McCann Erickson | | Advertiser | French Ministry of the Environment |
