Description / Synopsis

The grey-headed flying fox is faced with extinction yet the Government continues to issue permits to shoot them. WIRES are battling it out with the Government to try end the legalised killing of this native species. A provocative integrated campaign was developed which included an online petition with signatures being sent directly to the environment ministers inbox.

Context

The plight of the flying foxes are very low on the Government’s agenda. So much so that in 2001 the National Parks and Wildlife Service stated that these licenses would be phased out within 3 years, but so far the Government has taken no action.

Philosophy/Solution

Stop the legalised killing of the Grey-headed flying fox by pressuring the state government to stop issuing permits.

Results

Within the 3 month campaign period, thousands of emails were sent to the environment ministers inbox. Extensive free media coverage was provided by the major networks. Unfortunately though, the Government is yet to take affirmative action.
