Description / Synopsis

We need to protect our oceans from acidification. CO2 emissions don’t just cause climate change. They also cause ocean acidification, which threatens coral reefs as well as fish and shellfish.

Context

Because ocean acidification threatens all marine life, Oceana invested in this advertising campaign to highlight the most urgent goal: reducing CO2 emissions to achieve atmospheric levels of 350 parts per million (ppm) or less as soon as possible.

Philosophy/Solution

The advertisements were used to encourage countries to take action to reduce CO2 emissions surrounding the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009.

Results

We observed that there was a lot of attention paid to the ads. While visiting Copenhagen, many residents mentioned the ads to us, and we received good feedback from the conference participants. While ocean acidification was not addressed that year, it is now recognized in UNFCCC official documents, so ultimately progress was made.
