Description / Synopsis

This media highlights video features the growing impact of TerraCycle’s recycling initiatives around the world, and our mission to eliminate the idea of waste. It further emphasizes our programs’ impacts in schools, communities and businesses, helping them to reduce waste while facilitating the reuse, upcycling, or recycling of waste materials that are commonly sent to landfill.

Context

Waste is non-existent in nature, where any outputs become valuable inputs to another element of the natural system. Unfortunately, this does not hold true for human-generated waste. Cigarette butts, snack bags, plastic bottles and other forms of product packaging offer no benefit to natural systems, and in fact disturb or even damage the ecosystems that surround us. To deal with these waste streams, garbage and other waste materials are commonly disposed of in landfills or incinerators. TerraCycle rejects this prevailing linear model of disposal, developing recycling processes for traditionally non-recyclable waste. These recycling initiatives, called Brigade programs, are open to any individual, family, business, school or community organization, allowing anyone to collect non-recyclable waste and send it to TerraCycle for recycling. For each unit of waste collected, participants earn points that may be converted into monetary donations to charities or local schools. Through our partnerships with some of the largest product manufacturers in the world (Kraft Foods, L’Oreal, Nespresso, Procter & Gamble, Bimbo Bakeries, and Colgate-Palmolive, among many others), participation in these recycling programs is completely free.

Results

Our communications efforts and extensive use of PR have attracted significant attention and awareness to the innovative recycling initiatives we have developed, which allow traditionally non-recyclable waste – from snack bags and personal care waste to cigarette butts and toothbrushes – to be reused, upcycled or recycled. To date, over 50 million people collect waste for TerraCycle’s Brigade programs, helping to divert more than 4 billion units of waste from landfills and incinerators around the world. What began in North America has expanded into an international recycling effort, with TerraCycle programs currently active in 21 countries. Through these programs, over $10 million USD have been donated to charitable organizations around the world.
