The Summit

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was an international conference to draw up a global plan of action for further implementing Agenda 21, the Earth's sustainable development blueprint. It took place in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 26 August to 4 September 2002.

The World Summit followed up on the developments since the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The event was organised by United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) through a series of consultative meetings.

Official fora

The Summit itself took place at the Standton Convention Centre and comprised the following events:

  • plenary sessions, for delegates to debate on key sustainability topics (water and sanitation, energy, agricultural productivity, biodiversity, ecosystem management and health);
  • a multi-stakeholder dialogue, to enable direct interaction between governments and major groups (such as business and industry, NGOs
    or local authorities).

In addition, a non-governmental forum took place in Gallagher Estate.
