Reports | Process and calendar | Participating sectors | Consultation

Consultation with non-industry stakeholders was a key aspect of the sectoral reporting process. Therefore UNEP co-ordinated NGOs, research institutes, labour and trade unions, and public authorities to discuss the scope and content of the draft reports. While ownership of the reports rests with industry, reporting sectors were strongly encouraged to consider and incorporate stakeholder viewpoints and comments.

The following is a list of issues identified through this consultation process that are common to most sectors involved:

corporate social responsibility: there is a need to better understand the social role of industry and the means to improve current practice;

industry standards: the same standards need to be applied regardless of geographical location, however an extended implementation period should be accorded to "southern" industries to allow them to reach the required standards;

poverty alleviation: there is a need to better understand the linkages between poverty and industrial development;

reporting: triple bottom line reporting at the company level will continue to be a key tool for promoting sustainable entrepreneurship.
