WSSD Next Steps

UNEP Contribution to a Framework for Promoting Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns

UNEP's contribution to such a framework is based upon lessons learnt from its activities in this area, in particular its Cleaner Production and Sustainable Consumption programmes, the Life-Cycle Initiative and its voluntary initiatives with business sectors.

Key activities include:

  • de-linking implementation projects on consumption and production
  • adopting a functional approach to consumption (food, housing, clothing, mobility, health, leisure, etc)
  • supporting the organization of multi-stakeholder dialogue on key issues
  • facilitating the identification of specific benchmarks, indicators, policy instruments, tools and guidelines and options for technology innovation, technology transfer and financing mechanisms.
  • supporting (groups of) governments willing to strengthen and expand their current efforts on cleaner production through capacity-building, education and training, transfer of environmentally sound technologies
  • fostering global support and information-sharing by establishing a task force, involving all relevant stakeholders and strengthening institutions.

A briefing note will be the basis for a proposal to UNEP's Governing Council, February, 2003.
Comments and inputs are welcome by e-mail.

Type2 Partnerships

Non-negotiated, partnership initiatives are a important element of the WSSD outcome. Partners involve governments, Intergovernmental Organisations and Major Groups, including business and NGOs.

UNEP DTIE will continue to expand and foster its registered Type2 partnerships.

Multi-stakeholder Dialogue

One of the key activity areas for DTIE, leading up to, and following WSSD is that of multi-stakeholder dialogue and consultation with stakeholders.

UNEP is pursuing this activity area via two main channels:

1. Engaging Civil Society

Member states of UNEP expressed strong interest in seeing the organization playing a stronger role in catalysing effective action to protect the environment through enhanced collaboration with the multitude of civil society. In direct response UNEP is further developing, reviewing and revising the strategy for engaging civil society in the UNEP programme of activities. Following WSSD, a revised strategy paper was presented at the 19th Annual Consultative Meeting for Industry Associations.

2. Business and Stakeholder Dialogue

In pursuit of further developing dialogue between business and stakeholders in decision-making and sustainable development issues, DTIE presented a session on Multi-stakeholder dialogue, consultation and development of successful partnerships at its 19th Annual Consultative Meeting for Industry Associations.

Corporate accountability and reporting

DTIE will continue its work with regards to corporate accountability and reporting through voluntary initiatives, the Global Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative and through partnering with industry and related stakeholders.
