WSSD Outcomes

Three Main Outcomes

The primary Summit outcomes were:

A Summit of Implementation

The WSSD was an implementation-focused Summit that was described, at its finale, as "satisfactory" by Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of UNEP.

Some important new targets and commitments were established, such as:

  • Sanitation: halving the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015;
  • Chemicals: using and producing chemicals by 2020 in ways that do not lead to significant adverse effects on human health and the environment;
  • Agriculture: maintaining or restoring depleted fish stocks to levels that can produce the maximum sustainable yield on an urgent basis and where possible by 2015. Cease destructive fishing practices and establish marine protected areas and network by 2012;
  • Biodiversity: achieving a significant reduction in the current rate of loss of biological diversity by 2010.
  • Production and consumption: developing a 10-year framework with programmes in support of sustainable consumption and production patterns, based on science-based approaches and life-cycle analysis.

A full list of outcomes and commitments can be accessed on the official Summit website.
