Trade unions, industry and sustainability

A key component of sustainable business is the respect of labour rights and conditions. The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) has prepared a series of documents that present viewpoints on what key issues a particular industry should address in order to move itself closer to sustainability.

Input was solicited from labour groups, including the appropriate International Trade Secretariats (ITS). The reports however are not necessarily official policy of any ITS nor are they comprehensive given the limited time-frame for writing and research. Moreover, there are other relevant trade union policy documents and points of view than those represented here.

These documents should therefore be considered an introduction to trade union thinking on these issues rather than a final or complete position. This work feeds directly into the UNEP-led sector report process.

The ICFTU examined the following industry sectors. The associated reports are available as PDF.

If you have any comments on these reports, please contact the ICFTU directly.

Partnership Criteria - Stakeholder Forum

Two types of outcomes were proposed for the World Summit. The first are negotiated outcomes to be adopted by Member States at the Summit. The second are partnerships, commitments, plans of action etc., designed and implemented by various stakeholder groups. The goal of these "type 2 partnerships" is to produce concrete and specific initiatives to strengthen the implementation of Agenda 21.

The following document, prepared by the Stakeholder Forum, outlines possible criteria and mechanisms that could be used in the identification and development of partnerships. If you have any comments on this document, please contact the Stakeholder Forum directly.
