National Adaptation in Brazil - Pilot Project

Paraty, a city in the Rio de Janeiro State was chosen as the first tourism destination to implement the Green Passport campaign at the local level due to its natural and cultural features as well as the local commitment for sustainable tourism development.

Outputs
Brazil travel guide: The Green Passport travel guide raises awareness among Brazilian citizens and Portuguese speaking tourists travelling in Brazil about their potential to contribute to sustainable development by making responsible holiday choices.

Work plan for Paraty: The Brazilian partners (the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Tourism) have partnered with a committee composed of community leaders, local politicians and representatives of the region's tourism sectors to develop a work plan. The Green Passport 's work plan

  • supports the implementation of structured actions to improve the sustainability of the destination,
  • strengthens the local agenda 21,
  • promotes capacity-building, environmental education, community-based ecotourism initiatives and
  • develops waste reduction schemes
Outreach materials: Green Passport communication materials were developed for Paraty, including radio and TV spots, an interactive website, postcards and posters for hotels.
